As one of the world's most popular breeds, German Shepherds are also one of the most studied when it comes to breed-specific health concerns. Their nutritional needs go beyond what a standard adult dog formula provides.
Digestive Sensitivity
GSDs are notorious for having sensitive digestive systems. Bloat (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus) is a life-threatening risk in deep-chested breeds, and while feeding management (smaller meals, avoiding exercise around meal times) plays a role, diet composition matters too. Highly fermentable ingredients, excess fat, and foods that swell significantly with moisture are best minimised. Some GSDs also show sensitivity to grains, though true grain allergies are less common than owners assume.
Protein and Muscle Maintenance
GSDs are working dogs at heart. Even a family pet GSD tends to be active, and their muscular frame requires adequate high-quality protein to maintain condition — we recommend at least 25–28% on a dry matter basis for active adult GSDs. Lamb, chicken, and fish are generally well-tolerated protein sources for this breed.
Joint and Hip Support
Hip dysplasia is one of the most prevalent hereditary conditions in German Shepherds. Nutritional support from puppyhood — particularly appropriate calcium-to-phosphorus ratios during growth and omega-3 supplementation throughout life — can help reduce the severity and delay the onset of joint issues.
Coat and Skin Health
That iconic double coat requires consistent nutritional support. Biotin, zinc, and omega fatty acids are the key players. Dogs showing excessive shedding beyond seasonal norms, flakiness, or a dull coat often respond well to dietary adjustments within a few weeks.
